This work that you are holding in your hands was first published in 1748. It originated as a script for Eucharistic adoration to be followed for seven days, which Saint Alphonsus had composed for the novices of his Congregation. However, at the request of a lay friend who was visiting his home, he decided to expand the work – proposing a 31-day script, that is, one for each day of the month – and publish it, offering it to all the faithful. Saint Alphonsus' spirituality was profoundly marked by the lights that emanate from Eucharistic adoration.
He says that he made the most important decision of his life during a visit to the Blessed Sacrament: “I have the duty to reveal in this little book, above all out of gratitude to my Blessed Sacrament Jesus, this truth: I, by this decision to visit the Blessed Sacrament, even though I made it with such coldness and imperfection, made the resolution to leave the world, where, to my misfortune, I lived until the age of 26.”
