Our Lady of Mount Carmel or Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to Mary, mother of Jesus, in honor of her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order. The first Carmelites were hermits who lived on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land between the end of the 12th century and the middle of the 13th century. They built a chapel in the middle of their hermitages which they dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.
The name of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is closely linked to the region of Mount Carmel (in Hebrew, “carmel” means vineyard; and “elo” means lord; therefore, “Vineyard of the Lord”). It was there that the prophets Elijah and Elisha took refuge, making the place the scene of one of the most important events of the Old Testament and where they met and together built a small chapel in honor of Our Lady and for this reason they earned the name “Order of Carmelites”.
